The Buckeye Mess in 2006
  A Fighting
Withdrawal

Hosted by the Moocows

Impression (Federal): Western Infantry.

The general idea is a withdrawal from a battle like Perryville. A small rear guard on one of a myriad of farm roads is trying to move south as slowly as possible to buy the wagon trains more time. A more numerous Federal pursuer is following to keep them moving and to perhaps overtake the slower elements. The soldiers of both sides have just survived a major battle and are not that eager for a stand up fight at this point. The private soldier through company level officer will have no exact idea of what will happen next, where they’ll find water or camp for the night.

Impression (Federal): 28th Kentucky Infantry

A glimpse of  activities that may have occurred at this fort in the early Spring of 1862.  Portraying and interpreting the camp life, attitude and equipment of the Federal soldier.  We will recreate the daily routine of the men in Company A, 28th KY. while they were garrisoned at the fort, one of many points along the L&N Railroad which the 28th KY was guarding at this time. The weekend will consist of fatigue duty, drill, guard mount, and other activities that were common daliy routine for those serving at Ft Duffield. In addition to this we will have a full commissary set up to serve meals for the entire weekend as well. If you were at this event last year you certainly can attest to the hard work that was put in by the cooks.

Impression (Federal): 84th Indiana Infantry

During the course of the weekend we will recreate the daily routine of the men in Companies A, B, and C, 84th Indiana.   There will be duty rotations throughout the day on Saturday.  These rotations will involve drill, fatigue, guard and rest.  During drill, we plan on having several pieces of artillery available for the men to learn how to work a gun.  During fatigue detail, soldiers will be rebuilding part of the Northwest earthwork which has eroded over the years.  There is a gap in the works that is approximately 10 feet wide, by 8 feet deep, by 8 feet across.  This is the part that we will be rebuilding.

Impression: Peroid farm life in 1862 Kentucky

A living history weekend dedicated to the agricultural practices and domestic life of the Kentucky Civil War era civilian. “On the Farm – 1862” will be an educational experience for each participant as well as an interactive experience for the visiting public.

Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site is situated among the rural hills of south central Kentucky. Kentucky’s agricultural culture still thrives in the community and many of the same families that lived in Perryville during the war still occupy their ancestral lands. The battlefield park today is primarily located on what was the land of farmer H.P. Bottoms and John Russell. The battlefield was a farm long before it was a battlefield and after the battle it returned to being farmland. It is this unique history that we wish to interpret with “On the Farm – 1862.”
